Short story collection

stretching from dark fairy tales to dystopian visions, always saturated with horror and salted with humor.

These stories are an irresistible and witty genre mutation of the fairy tale, on which the grotesque grows so beautifully, and of the satire that gives them weight, a connection to the present, and criticality.

HDP Review

A Masterful Anthology

"Peris writes the way a sharp mind speaks, and the subtlety of his irony spreads through the text with the dynamics of a wave even after the ironic passage is behind us. This is a rare phenomenon in Croatian literature today."

Zelimir Peris: The Grace of Cypresses

We don't have much time at our disposal and it would be a shame to waste it on trivialities. Books like this story collection present themselves as the solution. Such books should be read obsessively, upijajući sve njihove komponente: od jezične vještine do zapanjujuće imaginacije koju istovremeno možemo interpretirati kao opis današnjice.

'The Grace of Cypresses': The Ambivalence of Story

Peris lucidly plays with genre and narrative conventions in these stories, as well as with the position and type of narrator, thus confirming his skill in building and leading a story so that its layers of meaning and events interweave and complement each other, managing to convey experience and ideas that are not necessarily explicitly expressible.

And that is why it matters to write, it matters to read, it matters to remember.

Stefica Cvek Award 2023

The Stefica Cvek Award, selected by Rebellious Readers, is given to books of rebellious and feminist literature. The Štefica Cvek Award celebrates the collective impact of works that challenge conventions, encourage critical thinking and offer a new perspective on the burning issues of our time.

Jury statement:

Gracija od čempresa by Želimir Periš is a collection of stories — but what stories! In this book you will find fairy tales dissolved by the tentacles of modernity, dystopia with a strong satirical core, an uncertain feminist utopia… This ingenious genre hybrid always places rebellious heroines at the centre of its stories who, even when they fall victim to male stupidity/rigidity/stubbornness, leave behind an inextinguishable spark of the idea of a better world. Periš manages to write in an openly engaged way, but without didacticism; add to this impression his obvious fondness for unexpected solutions and playful irony, and it becomes entirely clear why this is yet another book of which Štefica would be proud.

Lapis Histriae 2012

7th International Short Story Competition Lapis Histriae 2012, with the theme “Saints or Troublemakers?” Jury: Daša Drndić, Elis Deghenghi Olujić and Marcello Potocco.

Jury statement:

Želimir Periš’s story “How Grain is Threshed on the Threshing Floor” — grotesque in its furious series of examples of the “mysterious” deaths of villagers (predominantly women) in a village in the Dalmatian hinterland — exposes to satire the local tradition of invoking divine justice as a cover for brutal murders motivated by sheer desire for revenge, jealousy and envy. By choosing a pupil as narrator and setting the action in an unspecified, distant past, in the time of the emperor and his gendarmes, the author plays with a whole range of narrative devices, with dialectal and childlike, i.e. schoolroom, speech and, of course, with the transparent masks of a carnival of the adult world steeped in blood and hatred. It is a story of exceptional power, poetic completeness and satirical scope, which makes the reader laugh and at the same time prompts repeated re-readings, expanding one’s insights into the base motives behind the sacralisation of social injustice.

At the utterly unconventional, witty and unpretentious launch of this Zadar author’s book, everyone who found themselves at Guma bar had a wonderful time. With Judita Franković Brdar and Kristjan Novak at his side, Periš presented his latest novel — “Gracija od čempresa” — in a very concise, effortless and entertaining way, offering a glimpse into the inner world and reflections of an artist.

Tanja: In “Mladenka kostonoga” we met the (proto)type of your heroine. They are stubborn, brazen, sharp-tongued, combative and refuse to conform to the standard of the saint, martyr and victim imposed on women in this part of the world. How do these literary girls, young women and women come about? Because each is unique, each has her own specific voice and personality.

Želimir: My antagonists are likewise stubborn, brazen, sharp-tongued and combative — only they refuse to change the system in which they are moulded and in which they hold privileges.

Literature returned to the city in grand style. Neither rain nor wind prevented many Zadar residents from coming to enjoy the Talk Show of Oceans, Seas and Cypresses at Guma bar. The talk show, in the manner of American live broadcasts, was hosted by author Želimir Periš, while the Guma bar sofa welcomed author Kristian Novak and actress Judita Franković Brdar.
